Norris suspended, violated policy on domestic violence

-

Fomer A’s catcher Derek Norris was suspended for the rest of the season by Major League Baseball for violating the sport’s domestic violence policy nearly two years ago.

The commissioner’s office said Friday that Norris — who was released by the Rays on June 29 after hitting .201 in 53 games — violated the policy on Oct. 21, 2015, but did not announce the nature of the violation. Norris was placed on the restricted list for the remainder of the season.

“Mr. Norris cooperated throughout the investigation, including submitting to an in-person interview with MLB’s Department of Investigations,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “After reviewing the evidence, I determined that Mr. Norris’ conduct warranted discipline.”

Manfred said that although Norris denied the allegation, the player agreed to the discipline and not to contest it. Norris will forfeit $100,000 of his $1.2 million salary, which will be donated by the Rays to charitable organizations focused on preventing and treating victims of domestic violence. Beltre out: Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre could miss the rest of the regular season after an MRI exam showed a Grade 2 strain in his left hamstring.

The Rangers, who are in the AL wild-card race, said Beltre is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of four weeks. That would take his recovery into the final weekend of the regular season.

“Disappointed, I feel like I let the team down,” Beltre said. “I try my best to find a way to get better soon and we’ll see how it goes.” Pedroia back: Boston activated All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia after another stint on the 10-day disabled list because of left knee trouble. Pedroia was in the starting lineup at his regular position and batting fifth Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
