Shona Martin Kiilsgaard

May 22, 1948- August 15, 2017

Rev. Shona Martin Kiilsgaard died peacefully August 15, 2017 joining her beloved husband Rev. Sven Kiilsgaard and her parents Rodney and Jessie Martin. Her best friend Vicki Berg was at her side. She is survived by her sisters Moire Martin (Seneca Rising) and Fiona Martin (Beth Sandell), and friends Vicki Berg and Mike Allan.

Shona was born on May 22, 1948 in Sharon, PA. The family soon moved to California. She received her BA from UC Santa Barbara, her MSW from San Diego State and her M.Div from San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo. While at seminary she met and married the love of her life, Sven Kiilsgaard. Shona followed in her father’s footsteps in her love for community action, social justice and the church. She was ordained by the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1982.

Shona and Sven served at the First Presbyterian Church in Gridley, CA where they enjoyed a vibrant ministry. They were then called as co-pastors to the Community Presbyterian Church in Pismo Beach CA. Sven died in a tragic accident 6 months later and Shona continued as sole pastor for the next 11 years. She was a gifted preacher and administrator, friend and pastor. She retired to Long Beach, CA in 2004.

Shona’s circle of friends is widespread. She was generous, witty, caring and had a huge heart. You are so loved Shona! Gratitude for all that you brought into our lives and sympathy to all who grieve your loss from this world.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be considered to Community Presbyterian Church, 990 Dolliver St. Pismo Beach CA 93449: Shona M. Kiilsgaard Memorial Fund. Shona’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 21st 2017 at 2pm at Community Presbyterian Church in Pismo Beach.
