Michael C. Scranton, Esq.
July 7, 1940 - August 18, 2017
Michael C. Scranton, Esq., founder of the Scranton Law Firm, died on Friday, August 18, 2017. He died of lung disease. He passed peacefully and comfortably in his Concord home, surrounded by family and friends.
He is survived by his two sons: J.B. Scranton, Esq., (wife Missy Scranton, Ph.D., and son Calvin 3); and Christian Scranton, Esq., (wife Melanie Scranton and 2 sons, Nicolas 13, Luke 11, and daughter Gabrielle 8).
He is also survived by two brothers: Jack Scranton, Ph.D. (wife Victoria Clarke, M.A.); and Mark E. Scranton, Esq.
Professionally, he was dedicated to the preservation of trial by jury and to the due process rights of accident victims. He was an active member of Consumer’s Attorneys of California (COAC), and was a significant innovator in attorney advertising.
Born in Chicago in 1940, his family settled in Millbrae, where he graduated Capuchino High School. He attended University of California, Berkeley, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1963. He then attended U.C. Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), graduating in 1966. Admitted to the practice of law in 1967, he later established the Scranton Law Firm in 1973. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was very pleased at becoming a private pilot, and enjoyed flying his Beechcraft Bonanza for many decades.
The best years of his life were spent traveling the world with his family. His proudest legacy was in providing once-in-a-lifetime memories for his loved ones. In his later years his favorite times were spent with his grandchildren.
His remains were cremated and will be scattered at a private family ceremony.
A celebration of life service for friends and family will be held Saturday, September 23 at 11 o’clock, at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant in Walnut Creek.
As he was a great animal lover, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation in Walnut Creek.
He will be sorely missed by many.
