PRINCE WAIKIKI, HONOLULU

- — Jeanne Cooper

“Out of sight, out of mind” may seem an odd way to describe two 33-story towers of rosy limestone and glass, but since its opening in 1990, Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki & Golf Club kept a low profile among mainland visitors. That’s in part because of its location at Waikiki’s western end, and in part because it was marketed mostly in Japan. But thanks to a recent $55 million renovation, the renamed Prince Waikiki has broadened its appeal, celebrating both its waterfront location and Hawaiian roots through beautiful new public spaces and guest rooms.

Setting: Overlooking the sailboats and yachts of Ala Wai Harbor, within a short walk or free shuttle ride to Ala Moana Shopping Center or, in the other direction, the heart of Waikiki. All rooms have ocean or harbor views.

The appeal: Tranquillity by the sea. The 563 large, light-filled rooms and suites feature plush seating and bedding, as well as expansive marble bathrooms with Malie organic toiletries. Soak in the new infinity-edge crescent pool five stories above the harbor, near the original pool and pleasantly shaded Muliwai Deck. For $100 a day more, the Club Lounge offers an even more exclusive harborview retreat with breakfast, afternoon snacks, drinks and private concierge.

Insider tips: Besides the hotel’s 100 Sails Restaurant & Bar, known for bountiful, artfully presented buffets, Honolulu Coffee Co. sells artisan roasts and delectable breakfast items, including fresh-baked pastries such as lilikoi orange macadamia scones, and Katsumidori Sushi Tokyo serves excellent, moderately priced seafood and soba dishes for lunch and dinner.

Good to know: Walk 10 minutes to your choice of wide, sandy beaches. Book via the hotel’s website for free self-parking and Wi-Fi, plus no resort fee (otherwise $31 per day). Guests receive discounted greens fees and a free shuttle when playing the hotel’s 27-hole championship golf course in Ewa Beach.

Details: 100 Holomoana St., Honolulu. (808) 956-1111, reservations (888) 9774623, www.princewaikiki. com. From $283, which includes 14 percent in taxes (base rate $249).
