NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
1 Helicopter crash: Four people were killed Friday in the crash of a medical helicopter near Belvidere, N.C., the state Highway Patrol said. Patrol spokesman Master Trooper Christopher Knox said the Duke Life Flight helicopter went down around 11:45 a.m. Friday close to the Virginia line and about 160 miles east of Raleigh. Knox said it was not immediately known where the helicopter was headed when it went down and authorities do not yet know what caused the crash. He said the Federal Aviation Administration has been notified. The Duke Life Flight Web page says its helicopters usually have two critical care providers and a pilot on board and can only carry one patient at a time.
2 Accidental shooting: A South Carolina man took his own life moments after his 2-year-old son found a gun and accidentally shot and killed himself, authorities said. Coroner Gary Watts said toddler Kyree Myers’ mother called 911 after her son found the loaded gun in the family’s Columbia home and shot himself. When officers arrived, Keon Myers, 38, threatened to kill himself and fired the fatal shot into his head after refusing to drop the weapon, said Police Chief Skip Holbrook.
3 Caged child: A grandmother and a man are accused of keeping her 9-year-old granddaughter padlocked inside a wire dog kennel in a house in southeastern Wisconsin. Racine County sheriff ’s deputies and social workers investigated the home near Wind Lake after a teacher made a child abuse complaint Wednesday. The 46-yearold grandmother and the male homeowner, age 48, are in custody on possible charges of false imprisonment and other counts, said Sheriff Christopher Schmaling. Racine County Human Services removed the victim and a sibling from the residence and placed them in protective custody.
4 Congress apology: Veteran Alaska Rep. Don Young has apologized after he lashed out at a freshman lawmaker during a House floor debate, saying she “doesn’t know a damn thing what she’s talking about.” Young, 84, a Republican in his 23rd term, was offering an amendment about wildlife management on national preserves in his state Thursday night when Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington state spoke in opposition. Young, clearly angry, accused Jayapal of parroting talking points from a special interest group and said, “You may not know me, young lady, but I’m deeply disturbed.” 5 Nude suspect: Police in Northern California say a man arriving home from work found a naked woman he did not know asleep in his bed. The unidentified man told officers the strange saga started Tuesday when he found a parcel ripped open on the porch of his home in Anderson (Shasta County). Once inside, he said he saw a sandwich with a bite taken and an open beer. Then he found the woman sleeping in his bed and called 911. Police said Michelle Watkins, 33, got dressed, sat on the front porch until officers arrived and was arrested on suspicion of burglary. She is being held on $25,000 bail.
