Kicker Tavecchio added as insurance
The Raiders found an insurance policy in case Sebastian
Janikowski’s lingering back injury prevents him from kicking Sunday against Tennessee. They didn’t have to look far.
Oakland signed Giorgio Tavecchio to the practice squad Friday. Tavecchio, who kicked at Cal, has been with the Raiders the past few years in training camp. He hasn’t attempted any regular-season kicks.
Tavecchio, who attended Campolindo High in Moraga, had been working out at Campo since the Raiders released him last week. He traveled with the team to Nashville on Friday.
“You just stay ready and answer the call when it comes,” Tavecchio said. “It would be pretty quick (kicking Sunday), but I’ve been preparing for it a long time. So I’m ready.”
Tavecchio was with the Raiders throughout training camp. He made 3-of-4 field-goal attempts in the preseason, and 5-of-6 extra-point attempts.
Janikowski, a limited participant in practice the past three days, was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. The Raiders worked out three veteran kickers earlier in the week, but that could have been a ploy to pressure Janikowski into restructuring his contract (which he ultimately did).
One advantage for the Raiders if Tavecchio is forced into action Sunday: He, like Janikowski, is a left-footed kicker. That would make the adjustment easier for long snapper
Jon Condo and holder Marquette King.
To clear a spot for Tavecchio, the Raiders released defensive end Max Valles from the practice squad. Briefly: Fullback Jamize Olawale will miss Sunday’s game because of a quadriceps injury. ... The Raiders listed cornerback Gareon Conley, the first-round draft pick from Ohio State, as questionable for the game with a shin injury.
