Basketball Hall inducts McGrady, 10 other greats
Tracy McGrady says the celebration of his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., has been muted by the impact of Hurricane Harvey on his family and neighbors in Texas.
The seven-time NBA All-Star and two-time league scoring champion was among 11 basketball greats enshrined Friday in Springfield.
“Although this weekend is awesome — I’m humbled, I’m honored — what I left behind is way more important,” McGrady said. “Way more important.”
Former UConn star Rebecca Lobo and Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw celebrated the growth of women’s basketball, while Kansas men’s coach Bill Self, 54, said he felt a little uncomfortable being enshrined in the middle of his career.
Others honored Friday included Harlem Globetrotters player and later owner Mannie Jackson, former ABA and NBA star George McGinnis, Texas prep coach Robert Hughes, NCAA administrator Tom Jernstedt and former European star Nick Galis. Former Chicago Bulls general manager Jerry Krause, who died in March, and former Globetrotters and New York Rens player Zack Clayton were honored posthumously.
Chicago Bulls guard Cameron Payne had surgery on his broken right foot and is expected to be out three to four months.
Jim McDaniels, a 7-footer who led Western Kentucky to the NCAA Final Four in 1971, died at 69 in Bowling Green, Ky. Mr. McDaniels played professionally in the NBA and ABA from 197178.
