John Christophe­r Farrell

Passed away peacefully on September 2, 1917 at the age of 89. Beloved husband to Malvina (predecease­d), father to daughter Malvina and sons James (Hyang Sook) and John (Claudette), grandfathe­r to Stephanie and Kristen.

Born December 14, 1927 to Christophe­r Farrell of Trim, Meath and Mary of Gurteen, Sligo. John was a first generation Irish American and a true San Franciscan born and raised in Eureka Valley with his brothers Francis, James and Joseph (all predecease­d) and his sisters Mary Rita (predecease­d) and Trudy Strambi.

He attended Holy Redeemer Grammar School, St. James High School, and the University of San Francisco and was an U. S. Army veteran. After graduating from USF, he married the love of his life Malvina, and they were married for over fifty years until her death.

John was a dedicated public official with over 35 years of service to the City of San Francisco. He worked his way up through the ranks of City Hall to be appointed Controller by Mayor Joseph Alioto in 1973 and retired in 1988. He loved working for the City and always did what was in the best interests of our City.

John was an avid runner and averaged 3000 miles yearly for over a decade. He ran dozens of marathons including Boston, New York and San Francisco. He loved running at the beach and Polo Fields with his dogs Lola, Lupine and Ivan (all predecease­d). He was a huge Giants and 49ers fan and loved horse racing and poetry. He was a devout Roman Catholic his whole life. He will be deeply missed.

Friends may visit on Tuesday, September 12 starting at 5:00 pm with a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm at Duggan’s Mortuary, 500 Westlake, Daly City. A memorial mass will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Saint Anthony’s Dining Room.
