Familiar setting for new guard

Laken Tomlinson’s tenure with the 49ers could begin at the same stadium where he played his last meaningful game with the Lions: CenturyLink Field.

The 49ers are working to get their just-acquired guard ready for a visit to Seattle on Sunday, a game that will come 18 days after he was traded from Detroit.

If he replaces Zane Beadles, Tomlinson will face a formidable defensive front while still finding his way in a blocking scheme that was foreign to him when he arrived in Santa Clara. Adding to the degree of difficulty would be the din in Seattle, where Tomlinson started the Lions’ wild-card loss to the Seahawks in January.

“It’s definitely one of the loudest out there,” Tomlinson said of Seattle’s crowd noise.

Tomlinson was inactive for Sunday’s season-opening loss to the Panthers and Beadles struggled, allowing a sack of Brian Hoyer that resulted in a lost fumble. Tomlinson presumably will start once head coach Kyle Shanahan believes he has absorbed enough of the offense.

“The scheme is a lot to learn,” Tomlinson said, “but I think I can handle it. And I’m going out there and trying my best to exhibit that on the practice field.”

Tomlinson, the No. 28 pick in 2015, credited Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley, the No. 28 pick in 2007, for assisting him with his crash course in the offense.

“He’s come in very eager to learn and to pick up all that stuff,” Staley said. “He’s not overwhelmed by anything. Coming from another team, he had excuses he could make. ‘Oh, I wasn’t here in training camp.’ He’s come here and been gung-ho about picking up everything he can.” Injury report: Safety Jimmie Ward (hamstring) remained limited in practice, although he’s clearly moving better than he did last week when he missed the opener.

Tight end George Kittle (hamstring, calf ) was a full participant in practice after he was limited Wednesday.

For the Seahawks, All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman (hamstring) missed his second straight practice. Tackle claimed: The Panthers claimed offensive tackle John Theus off waivers from the 49ers, who parted with the 2016 fifth-round pick to sign inside linebacker Elijah Lee off the Vikings’ practice squad Wednesday.
