Street disorder in London at Arsenal-Cologne game

Crowd disorder marred Cologne’s return to European soccer competitio­n after 25 years as the German team’s fans caused havoc in London and forced the Europa League game against Arsenal to be delayed for an hour. Arsenal won 3-1. The presence of thousands of ticketless Cologne fans, who marched through the streets of the British capital, made it hard for ticket holders to enter Emirates Stadium.

Police said four people were arrested. About 20,000 Cologne fans came to London, after only 3,000 tickets were allocated to them.

Former Santa Clara forward Sofia Huerta has received approval from FIFA to switch her affiliatio­n from Mexico to the United States. Huerta was born in Boise, Idaho, and played for Mexico at the 2012 Under-20 World Cup. Huerta, who had two goals in four appearance­s for Mexico is now training with the U.S. team.

NHL: The Minnesota Wild agreed to terms with restricted free-agent left wing Marcus Foligno on a four-year, $11.5 million contract. The Wild announced the deal the day before they take the ice for the start of training camp.

Alex Ovechkin released a statement through the Washington Capitals acknowledg­ing that the ability to represent Russia in the 2018 Olympics has been taken out of his hands. Ovechkin said the Internatio­nal Ice Hockey Federation has assured the NHL that players under contract won’t be able to play in South Korea.

College football: A federal judge has decided that a man convicted of rape as a teen in a highly publicized Stuebenvil­le, Ohio, case will be placed temporaril­y on the Youngstown State active roster. Ma’lik Richmond sued the university after the school allowed him to join the team as a walk-on and then told him he couldn’t play this season after a female student circulated a petition asking that he be kept off the team. U.S. District Judge Benita Pearson granted a temporary restrainin­g order allowing Richmond to play until a hearing on his case Sept. 28.

Crime: Former Indiana wide receiver Camion Patrick is one of four men facing homicide charges in connection with the July 25 fatal stabbing of an 18-year-old man in Tennessee.

NBA: The Chicago Bulls signed 6-foot-11 center Diamond Stone, who played in seven games with the Los Angeles Clippers last season.
