Thomas G. Dunn
The grandson of a gold miner, the son of a fireman, and a fourth generation San Franciscan, Thomas “Homerun” Dunn circled the bases for the last time on September 12, 2017.
Thomas George Dunn was born on December 11, 1946, and is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Laura, and his loving children, Ryan (Julie) Dunn and Emily Dunn; four adoring grandchildren, Dylan, Molly, Emerson and Cole; along with his siblings Kathy (Robert) Lindsey, Robert Dunn, Joan Dunn; in-laws, Alice Fathy and Linda and Michael Delagnes; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Tom’s livelihood spanned two careers: first, as a San Francisco Firefighter, and second, as a trial attorney who was a proud member of ABOTA.
To those of you who knew Tom, it would not surprise you that he wrote the following in anticipation of this day:
I wish I could be here to read this but, apparently, God had other plans for me.
First of all, I’d like to say that I died a happy man! I had a great wife, two terrific children, a wonderful daughter–in-law and four of the best grandchildren anyone could be blessed with, all of whom contributed to my happiness. Toss in some great friends and a number of unparalleled life experiences which all helped me lead a joyful and eventful life.
I also feel lucky to be able to write my own obituary. Relying on someone else to do so may have led to some mistakes!
I was a good boy growing up, but then started down a path that was going to lead to a poor result. Volunteering for the Draft and serving in the Army refocused me, meeting and marrying Laura gave me direction, and having children made me a better man than I may have ever been.
My life was rich with adventure. I traveled the world, walking the plains of the Serengeti; climbing Machu Pichu; exploring King Tut’s tomb; hiking the Great Wall of China; rafting the Zambezi River; and, at the age of 21, riding the TransSiberian Railroad.
I’ve lived with cancer for 9 years.
Though I may not be here in your presence I will be in your hearts and minds as long as you will have me. One last thought before I bid you a fond farewell,
never give up…never give up…never give up!
The funeral mass will be held at St. Brendan’s Church on Monday, September 18, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow. Any donations may be made in Tom’s name to the St. Ignatius College Prep Baseball Program, www.siprep.org/ memorial.
