Richard Bruce Barton

1945 - 2017

After a long illness, Richard died on September 7 at the VA Medical Center. He is preceded in death by his sister Sherry Barton, brother George Barton, nephew Carlos LeFranc, grandson Wyatt Bredell, and parents Buzz Barton and Audrey Barton Lee.

Richard served in the US Army. He graduated from San Francisco State and obtained a Teaching Credential. He taught middle school in Monterey County, as well as calculus and computer science in Marin County. He also worked for the US Postal Service and was a Union Representative for the Maritime Union.

Richard was a force of nature with wide ranging interests. He played guitar and dobro and was a big fan of the Grateful Dead and Poco. He traveled the world with his former wife, Vicki Richards. Richard had an outrageous sense of humor, a sharp wit and high intellect, and read eclectically and voraciously.

Richard leaves behind long-time companion Beverly Buchanan, son Bryan Bredell (Jen), grandsons Taylor Bredell (Chris) and Stuart Bredell (Gina), greatgrandchildren Karlye and Cameron, sisters Sandra Barton and Mary Rulli (Dan), various nieces and nephews, and many friends including childhood friend Mike Yuhas and very helpful friend Louise Crotwell.

We wish to thank Hospice by the Bay for his care, especially Russel Forster and Maud Engle, and all of the wonderful people at the VA.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be in the future.
