Owner of famed Secretaria­t dies

Penny Chenery, who bred and raced 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretaria­t as well as realizing her ailing father’s dream to win the Kentucky Derby in 1972 with Riva Ridge, died Saturday in her Boulder, Colo., home following complicati­ons from a stroke, according to her children. She was 95.

In 1973, Secretaria­t captured the imaginatio­n of fans when he became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. He won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths. Tennis: David Goffin and Steve Darcis won their reverse singles matches as Belgium defeated 28-time champion Australia 3-2 in the Davis Cup semifinals in Brussels to set up a title match with France in November. Back with the France Davis Cup team, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sent his country to its 18th final by defeating Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-2 in Lille.

Zarina Diyas won her first WTA title, beating Miyu Kato 6-2, 7-5 to take the Japan Women’s Open title in Tokyo in a final between two qualifiers. Basketball: Candace Parker’s driving layup with 2.9 seconds to play gave the visiting Los Angeles Sparks an 89-87 win and three-game sweep of the Phoenix Mercury in their WNBA semifinal series. The defending champion Sparks advanced to their second straight Finals and fifth overall.

Maya Moore scored 21 points and the Minnesota Lynx swept the host Washington Mystics with an 81-70 win in Game 3 of their WNBA semifinal series. Minnesota hosts the Sparks in Game 1 of the Finals on Sunday.

Slovenia won its first European championsh­ip, defeating Serbia 93-85 in Istanbul behind 35 points by Goran Dragic. Soccer: Andre Blake made eight saves for Philadelph­ia and the Union and the New York Red Bulls played to a 0-0 draw in Harrison, N.J. Hockey: Poor ice after a concert forced the Arizona Coyotes to cancel their preseason home game Monday night against the Los Angeles Kings.

The Coyotes acquired defenseman Jason Demers from the Florida Panthers for forward Jamie McGinn.
