Nursing home death toll: A ninth patient from a Hollywood, Fla., nursing home that overheated during power outages following Hurricane Irma died Tuesday, according to police. The death of Carlos Canal occurred nearly a week after the nursing home became the focus of a criminal investigation when the air conditioning failed and eight other patients died. Police did not immediately release a cause of death, but Canal’s daughter told the Miami Herald he died of pneumonia with a 105-degree fever. Power went out for millions across Florida after Irma strafed the state with wind and rain. The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills was evacuated and shut down last Wednesday, and authorities are investigation what happened.

University shooting: Three people face charges of inciting a riot and battery of an officer after violent clashes with campus police at Georgia Tech following a vigil for a student fatally shot by officers, a university spokesman said. Police shot and killed Scout Schultz, 21, Saturday night after the student called 911 to report an armed and possibly intoxicated suspicious person, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. Georgia Tech hasn’t identified the officer who fired the fatal shot and has refused to release any information about the officers who confronted Schultz.

Meningitis outbreak: A Massachusetts pharmacist facing murder charges for his role in a deadly nationwide meningitis outbreak went on trial Tuesday in a Boston court. Glenn Chin is charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy and other crimes under federal racketeering law. He was the supervisory pharmacist at the New England Compounding Center in Framingham. The 2012 meningitis outbreak killed 76 people and sickened more than 700 others. It was traced to contaminated steroid injections made by the facility. Undiscovered body: The body of a man who police believed killed himself sat in his pickup truck in a Kansas City International Airport parking lot for eight months before being discovered, and his family wants to know why it wasn’t noticed sooner. The body of 53-year-old Randy Potter was found last week after someone reported a bad smell coming from the truck, The Kansas City Star reports. Police said the man from suburban Lenexa, Kan., appeared to have died by suicide, but provided no details. L.A. quake: A magnitude 3.6 earthquake was felt in Los Angeles on Monday night, particularly on the Westside and in the San Fernando Valley. The epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at 11:20 p.m., was just west of the Sepulveda Pass section of the 405 Freeway in the Santa Monica Mountains. The U.S. Geological Survey said light to moderate shaking — categorized as intensity 4 and 5 — was felt in parts of the Westside and the San Fernando Valley, but probably was not heavy enough to cause any significant damage. Shaking was also felt in Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Glendale. There were no reports of damage.
