Cal alum Rabb signs with Grizzlies

-

The Memphis Grizzlies signed Ivan Rabb, the 35th draft pick overall from Cal, to a contract days before opening training camp. Terms were not disclosed.

The Grizzlies swapped a future second-round draft pick to Orlando for the 6-foot-10, 220-pound power forward. Last season with the Bears, Rabb averaged 10.5 rebounds to lead the Pac-12, and he also scored 14 points per game.

Rabb, 20, started 64 of his 65 games in his two seasons at Cal. Colleges: Darius Tice rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns as No. 21 South Florida dominated defending American Athletic Conference champion Temple 43-7 on Thursday night for its schoolrecord ninth consecutive victory.

The Bulls (4-0) have not lost since falling by 16 points to Temple in October in Philadelphia — a setback that wound up costing them a berth in the AAC championship game.

Nebraska abruptly fired athletic director Shawn Eichorst, citing a failure to improve the “on-field performance” by the Cornhuskers.

Chancellor Ronnie Green announced the move five days after the football team dropped to 1-2 for the second time in three years after a 21-17 home loss to Northern Illinois. Eichorst joined Nebraska in October 2012, and has about $1.7 million remaining on a contract that runs through June 2019.

Defending national champion Clemson has lost its kicker for the season after he was injured on the last play of practice. Head coach Dabo Swinney said a defensive lineman rolled into Greg Huegel’s leg Wednesday after he kicked during a two-minute drill.

Swinney says the junior walked off the field, but tests Thursday showed he tore his ACL. Crime: Former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Raul Mondesi, 46, was sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of embezzlement during his term as mayor of his hometown in the Dominican Republic.

The district court of San Cristobal, a town west of the capital Santo Domingo, also ordered that Mondesi pay a $1.3 million fine. The attorney general’s office charged Mondesi of embezzling $6.3 million while he was mayor of San Cristobal from 2010 through ’16.
