sticking to the Peninsula for most of its history, Menlo Park’s Facebook could soon move thousands of employees into a building in the city’s Financial District.

The 436,000-squarefoot space at 181 Fremont St. is the biggest leasing deal for a company in San Francisco in three years. The building, located near the Salesforce and Millennium towers, is scheduled to open before the end of the year.

The office will be home to an undisclosed number of Facebook workers, including a small group of employees working on Instagram, beginning in early 2018. Instagram will retain its own headquarters on Facebook’s Menlo Park campus, with most employees staying there.

Before being acquired by Facebook for $1 billion in 2012, the photosharing startup had a small office in the South Park neighborhood. Historically, Facebook has moved acquired companies’ employees to its main campus in Menlo Park, forcing employees living in San Francisco to ride a company-run network of shuttle buses or drive to the office.

The 181 Fremont St. space can hold an estiAfter mated 2,000 to 3,000 workers.

“We have secured a lease at 181 Fremont in San Francisco,” Jamil Walker, a spokesman for Facebook, said in a statement. “With this lease, we’ve obtained the space we need at 181 Fremont to support our growth.”

The lease was first reported by the San Francisco Business Times. In June, Bloomberg reported that Facebook had drafted a letter of intent for a “small” office at 181 Fremont St.
