Baseball: Major League Baseball owners unanimousl­y approved the sale of the Miami Marlins’ franchise by Jeffrey Loria to an investment group led by Derek Jeter and venturecap­italist Bruce Sherman. A $1.2 billion agreement was submitted to MLB last month to sell the team to a group led by Sherman, who will be the controllin­g owner. Jeter plans to be a limited partner in charge of the business and baseball operations.

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez will not be on the Dodgers’ NL Division Series roster and is expected to miss the entire postseason after being plagued by back tightness all season.

Adrian Beltre is likely done for the season with a strained left hamstring after he was held out of the lineup a day after Texas was eliminated from postseason contention.

The son of Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez has signed a minor-league deal with the Detroit Tigers. Pedro Martinez Jr. is a 17-year-old third baseman from the Dominican Republic. College basketball: Arizona guard Rawle Alkins could be out up to three months after undergoing surgery for a broken right foot. The school said the sophomore had surgery Wednesday and his estimated return is 8 to 10 weeks after injuring his foot in voluntary team activities. Obituary: Red Miller, the head coach who guided the Denver Broncos from obscurity to their first Super Bowl after the 1977 season, has died after complicati­ons from a stroke. He was 89. Mr. Miller coached the Broncos from 1977 through ’80 and compiled a 42-25 record.
