Dyson blows 2-run lead

PHOENIX — The Giants began this wasted year by blowing a ninth-inning lead and losing to Arizona at Chase Field. In a sad sort of symmetry, they ended their road schedule the same way.

Sam Dyson, who has been next to automatic since he became the Giants’ closer, allowed three runs in the ninth Wednesday, blowing a two-run lead and handing the Diamondbacks a 4-3 victory.

Dyson walked David Peralta with the bases loaded and one out to end the game, his second blown save in 16 chances since he replaced Mark Melancon. Melancon blew the save in the season opener.

The Giants were two outs away from a 63rd win this season, which would have ensured they could not lose 100 games. Now they need to win one of the final three games at AT&T Park this weekend against the Padres.

The Giants ended with a 26-55 road record, the secondmost losses in franchise history. They won three road series, all in the first half, against the Dodgers, Cardinals and Pirates.

“We know that’s been a big issue with us, not that our home play is great,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “Winning three road series is not going to work. It would have been nice to get this one, but it got away from us.

“That’s the way this season has gone.”

The ninth inning started with J.D. Martinez’s second homer of the series and 45th of the season. Dyson then allowed singles by Jake Lamb and A.J. Pollock.

Joe Panik made a great throw home on Daniel Descalso’s grounder to nail pinch-runner Kristopher Negron and temporarily preserve the 3-2 Giants lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Crawford nearly got an even more impressive out at the plate on John Ryan Murphy’s grounder in the hole, but Pollock beat it to tie the game. Dyson then walked Peralta on five pitches to end it.

Jeff Samardzija held Arizona to Lamb’s solo homer in six innings. The Shark will end the year with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.41-to-1, the best ever by a Giants pitcher with enough qualifying innings.
