Modern marvel in Noe Valley

Refined finishes in five-bedroom contemporary

- By Jordan Guinn

Sumptuous finishes and dramatic outdoor spaces define architect Chris McMahon’s latest creation in Noe Valley.

All told, there are two view terraces and three fire pits, as well as patios off the great room and master suite. Modern design permeates the fivebedroom residence.

“I love Noe Valley for the contrast and complementing between the homes, there’s such a mix between Edwardian, Victorian and modern,” he said. “There’s a lot of character.”

Steel, glass and timber strike bold finishes in rooms with grand proportions and an abundance of natural light. High-tech finishes include Nest climate control, security cameras, Legrande light switches and Sonos-ready wiring.

Wide-plank oak floors span the interior as oversized windows in the great room frame city views. Slabs of travertine tile fashion a floor-to-ceiling surround for the gas fireplace, and the chef ’s kitchen houses dark wood cabinetry and quartz counters with waterfall edges.

A walnut island anchors the cooking space that’s outfitted with Gaggenau appliances. LED lights complement a trio of skylights illuminating the kitchen.

Astute engineering fashioned a picturesque backyard with three separate gathering spaces. Two of these areas exist off the main level, while the third comes in the form of a sunken terrace off the master suite a floor below. The great room opens to a deck that overlooks the master suite’s terrace, while the back of the lot offers a garden with a built-in barbecue and bench seating.

The lavish master suite hosts dual walk-in closets, and a freestanding soaking tub and decadent shower pair with dual walnut vanities and porcelain tile in the bathroom. The west-facing suite leads to the sunken terrace that’s 12 feet below the outdoor spaces off the main living level. There’s a spiral staircase connecting the patio to the outdoor area off the great room.

A pent room with terraces off its eastern and western ends crowns the four-story home. There’s a pair of retractable glass walls on the east side of the room that open to the terrace looking out to the bay and city skyline all the way to Sutro Tower. The western terrace features a frosted glass railing for privacy.

McMahon collaborated with Greene and Grey Interior Design and Squared Root Landscaping on the project that’s listed at $4.75 million.
