TUESDAY, OCT. 3

-

One of the bright spots in the lineup of new comedies this season premieres today, “The Mayor,” starring Brandon Michael Hall as a hip-hop artist named Courtney Rose who decides to run for mayor of his Northern California town of Fort Grey and then, lo and behold, he wins. Now what? Well, he’s got to be mayor, but needless to say, he goes about doing the job differently than the previous holder of the office, guest star David Spade. The cast includes Yvette Nicole Brown as his mom and Lea Michele as a political wonk who tries to manipulate Courtney into being a typical politician and grudgingly admits he’s more effective just being who he is. The show premieres at 9:30 p.m. on ABC, right after the final season premiere of“The Middle” at 8 p.m., “Fresh Off the Boat” at 8:30 p.m., and “Black-ish ”at9 p.m. ABC brings its Tuesday A game to a close with the premiere of the comedy drama “Kevin (Probably) Saves the

World,” starring Jason Ritter as a youngish man whose life has come apart to the extent that he tried to end it. He goes to visit his sister (Joanna Garcia Swisher) and her daughter, played by Chloe East, and is awakened from his self-focus by a heavenly messenger (Kimberly Hebert

Gregory) who makes him a fabulous lunch and tells him, by the way, he’s been chosen by God to save the world. As dopey as that may sound, it is heartwarming and instantly appealing. Ritter has the leading role he’s been owed for a long time, and the rest of the cast is terrific as well. Reality, spiritualism and a touch of the extra-terrestrial work well to make the drama one of the fall’s most promising new shows.

The eighth season of “Counting Cars” launches on the History Channel at 10 p.m. The third season of “Cyberwar” kicks off on Viceland at 10 p.m.

New episodes of “Queen Sugar” resume at 10 p.m., a special night, on OWN.
