California political leaders react
Gov. Jerry Brown (D): “Our prayers and deepest sympathies are with the families and loved ones of those killed and injured in last night’s tragic and senseless shooting and we stand with the people of Nevada in this difficult time.” Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D): “We are heartbroken by the lives lost. We are heartbroken for their families and loved ones. We are heartbroken that we can’t pass commonsense gun laws in our nation.” State Senate President Kevin de León (D): “We are a nation of laws that makes it far too easy for any individual to acquire weapons designed for hostile battlefields. Those weapons of mass death have turned our great nation into a shooting gallery, and Congress must act to stop it.” State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D): “The police say the shooter appeared to have acted alone. That’s not true. Every gun lobbyist and the politicians who do their bidding were all in that room with him.” State Senate GOP leader Patricia Bates (R): “Words can’t truly convey the horrific nature of what happened last night in Las Vegas. As we await further details, I grieve for those killed and pray for the recovery of those wounded.” U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D): “We must not allow ourselves to become numb to these massacres that can snuff out so many lives in such a short time. It should shock every American that one individual, with easy access to weapons and ammunition, can inflict such devastation.” U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D): “We cannot simply throw up our hands or continue to justify the presence of weapons of war whose primary purpose is to kill the largest number of human beings in the shortest amount of time possible.” U.S. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R): “These are times when we turn to God trying to understand how such inhuman acts can happen. Our nation prays for those who died and for those still fighting to live.” U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D): “Congress has a moral duty to address this horrific and heartbreaking epidemic.” U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee (D): “Congress must take action — not just in our words — but also in our deeds to prevent senseless tragedies like this from ever happening again.” State Sen. Scott Wiener (D): “The Trump administration is wrong: Now is absolutely the time to talk about guns and the real damage these killing machines are doing to our society.” State“We are Sen. ferventlyJim Nielsen praying (R):for the victims and their families. We are all grieving about this tragedy from the bottom of our hearts. This individual's behavior does not speak for America or what we stand for.” U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D): “My heart beats for every victim. This does not have to be us. We are not helpless. We can be louder than these bullets.” San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón (D): “We may never know why this man chose to take life, but we’ve known for years what enabled him to commit one of the vilest acts in our nation’s history.”
