Louisville clears way for firing Pitino
Louisville’s interim president has been authorized to fire head basketball coach Rick Pitino because of a federal bribery investigation. The school’s Athletics Association, a body of officials that oversees Louisville’s sports program, unanimously approved a resolution for the firing.
The next move is for university interim President Greg Postel to notify the Hall of Fame coach of Louisville’s plan to fire him after 16 seasons.
“The letter that the board has asked me to write will go through in detail and explain the logic,” Postel said, “and that letter will be crafted as soon as possible.” High school basketball: LaMelo Ball, who scored 92 points in a game for Chino Hills (San Bernardino County) last season, will be home-schooled and not play for any school this season, his father, LaVar Ball, said, adding, “I’m going to make him the best basketball player ever.”
LaMelo Ball, 16, is the brother of Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball and UCLA freshman LiAngelo Ball. Soccer: FIFA has fined the German soccer federation $33,000 because fans chanted Nazi slogans at a Sept. 1 World Cup qualifying game in the Czech Republic. NHL: The Minnesota Wild will start the regular season without left wing Zach Parise, who has been slowed by a back injury. Parise will not travel to games at Detroit on Thursday and at Carolina on Saturday.
