Marleau has 2 goals in debut with Leafs

-

Patrick Marleau scored twice in his Maple Leafs debut and Toronto beat host Winnipeg 7-2 on Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams.

The 38-year-old signed with Toronto as a free agent after 19 seasons with the Sharks. He has 510 career goals.

Nazem Kadri, James van Riemsdyk and William Nylander scored in a three-minute span in the first period. Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner also scored, and Frederik Andersen made 35 saves.

New Winnipeg goalie Steve Mason was pulled after Marleau’s second goal 36 seconds into the third period, having allowed five goals on 20 shots.

With Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba in the penalty box for hooking, Kadri went in front of Mason and took a shot, got his own rebound and jammed the puck into the net.

Mason was beaten again after Matthews sent a pass across to Marleau, who went in alone, and flipped a backhander into the net at 8:32. Marleau added his second goal after Kadri went down the ice into the corner and fed a pass back to the newcomer 36 seconds into the third. Oilers 3, Flames 0: Connor McDavid had a hat trick to spark host Edmonton. Blues 5, Penguins 4: Alex Pietrangelo beat Matt Murray 1:15 into overtime to give visiting St. Louis a victory over two-time defending champion Pittsburgh. Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist for the Blues, Brayden Schenn and Colton Parayko also scored, and Jake Allen finished with 34 saves. Sidney Crosby and Conor Sheary scored 54 seconds apart in the third to tie it, but the Penguins couldn’t complete the comeback.

Jagr to Flames: Jaromir Jagr has signed with the Flames. The 45-year-old agreed to a one-year deal for his 24th NHL season — and first with a Canadian team.

“I already said in a Czech newspaper it’s 99.9 percent that this will be my last season, so I want to get the experience to one day say I played for a Canadian team,” Jagr said.

The five-time scoring champion is second behind Wayne Gretzky in NHL history with 1,914 points (765 goals, 1,149 assists).

Jagr has played 1,711 NHL games with Pittsburgh, Washington, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, New Jersey and Florida and is 57 games from passing Gordie Howe for the most NHL games played (1,767).

Briefly: Minnesota signed left wing Daniel Winnik to a oneyear, $660,000 contract. He was a free agent after a careerhigh 12 goals in 72 games last season for Washington . ... Buffalo acquired defenseman Zach Redmond in a minorleague trade that sent forward Nicolas Deslauriers to Montreal.
