Luck faces limitations after return to Colts

-

Andrew Luck put on his familiar red No. 12 jersey, trotted onto the practice field and got back into his normal Wednesday routine. A little stretching, a little footwork, even a little throwing.

Even he figured it’s about time.

After missing all of the Indianapolis Colts’ offseason workouts, all of training camp, all of the preseason and Indy’s first four regular-season games, the Colts’ quarterback made his long-awaited appearance on the practice field.

“It was fun to be back on the field and put on a jersey and a helmet and get to go out there and throw a couple of passes with the guys,” Luck said in his first comments since July 29.

His workload will be limited. Head coach Chuck Pagano has said Luck won’t play Sunday against the 49ers.

Cam Newton has “expressed regret” for his response to a female reporter’s question, a team spokesman said. When Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton about wide receiver Devin Funchess’ route running, Newton smiled and said, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. It’s funny.”

Carolina spokesman Steven Drummond said in a statement that Newton had a conversation with Rodrigue after the news conference and expressed regret for his remarks. Rodrigue released a statement saying Newton didn’t apologize.

The Packers’ Davante Adams returned to practice after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from Chicago linebacker Danny Trevathan and was carted off the field on a stretcher.

The New Orleans Saints placed rookie linebacker Alex Anzalone on injured reserve following his shoulder injury during Sunday’s victory over Miami in London. Baseball: Kyle Hendricks is the Game 1 starter for the defending World Series champions. Hendricks gets the ball Friday night when the Cubs visit Washington for the opener of their NL Division Series.

Manager Joe Maddon also announced Jon Lester will start Game 2 on Saturday in Washington, followed by Jose Quintana in Game 3 at Wrigley Field and Jake Arrieta in Game 4, if necessary.

The Nationals haven’t announced their rotation, but Stephen Strasburg seems the most likely option for Game 1. Reigning NL Cy Young Awardwinner Max Scherzer tweaked his right hamstring in his final regular-season start, and it’s unclear when he might be able to pitch in the series.

Soccer: The San Francisco Deltas tied host Miami FC 1-1 to earn a point against the league’s top club. The tie keeps the Deltas in second place in the combined standings with an 11-5-10 record for 43 points.

Motor sports: Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves is done racing full-time in the IndyCar Series. Team Penske said it is moving Castroneves to its new sportscar program next season.

WNBA: Former San Antonio Stars coach Dan Hughes is the head coach of the Seattle Storm. He replaces interim coach Gary Kloppenburg.
