Leslie Montgomery Hartman died peacefully on September 30, 2017. He was born in Pennsylvan­ia on May 1, 1928 to Judith and John Hartman, the seventh of nine children. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1950 and the University of Pennsylvan­ia, Law School on 1953. He served in the Judge Advocates department of the U S Air Force from 1953 to 1957. During his service, he was stationed for one year at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, CA, and later at Far Eastern Air Force Headquarte­rs in Tokyo, Japan. In 1958, he returned to his home town of Chambersbu­rg, PA and practiced law for one year before moving to San Francisco. From 1959 to 1963, he worked as an attorney in the District Counsel Office of the Internal Revenue Service. He went into private practice in 1963 until his retirement in 2000.

Les had a great love of family, gardening, travel and photograph­y. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Darlene and four children: Philip (Amy) Hartman, Arroyo Grande, CA, Owen (Kimberly) Hartman, San Carlos, CA, Brenda (Ronald) Rumbaugh, Mission Viejo, CA, Amy Hartman, San Mateo, CA and seven grandchild­ren: Alexis, Amber, Benjamin, Virginia, Austin, Thomas and Mary Jane. Les is also survived by two sisters: Jane Griffith, Jenkins Towne, PA and Patricia Crain, Capistrano Beach, CA.

A celebratio­n of Les’ life will be held on Monday, October 9, 2017 at 1 pm at West Portal Lutheran Church, 200 Sloat Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94132.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory may be given to West Portal Lutheran Church or Vitas Hospice, 1400 Fashion Island Blvd, Suite 920, San Mateo, CA 94404.
