Reid, Foster getting close

Help is on the way, just not this week.

On Friday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said two defensive starters, safety Eric Reid (knee) and inside linebacker Reuben Foster (ankle), could return when the 49ers visit Washington on Oct. 15.

Reid and Foster have been ruled out of Sunday’s meeting at Indianapolis.

“They were definitely more ready to practice this week,” Shanahan said. “We anticipate they’ll be ready to go on Wednesday. And it will be a day-today thing to see if they have a chance in the game.”

Linebacker Dekoda Watson (groin) and defensive back Adrian Colbert (hamstring) also won’t play against the Colts. With both players sidelined, it’s possible cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon ,a third-round pick, and linebacker Pita Taumoepenu could make their NFL debuts. Goodwin update: Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin is listed as questionable, but Shanahan anticipates Goodwin will be available after he suffered a concussion last week.

“I’d be surprised if he wasn’t ready to go on Sunday,” Shanahan said.

Goodwin’s latest concussion is his fourth in 14 months and his fifth since 2014. He has missed one game because of a concussion in his career. Honoring No. 18: On Sunday, Peyton Manning’s jersey will be retired and he will be inducted into the Colts’ Ring of Honor during a halftime ceremony. On Saturday, a statue of Manning will be unveiled outside Lucas Oil Stadium.

On KNBR this week, general manager John Lynch joked that the Colts had made the 49ers their “homecoming” opponent.
