No. 3 Oklahoma shocked by Iowa State

-

This Iowa State team is different.

Kyle Kempt passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns, including a 25-yarder to Allen Lazard that put the Cyclones ahead with 2:19 left, and Joel Lanning made plays on offense and defense to lead Iowa State to a stunning 38-31 victory at No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday.

The loss snapped Oklahoma’s nation-leading 14-game winning streak and the Sooners’ 18-game run against the Cyclones, which dated to 1990. It was Iowa State’s second victory over Oklahoma since 1961, and the Cyclones (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) did it without their starting quarterback.

“There’s been a lot of adversity at Iowa State for a long time and there’s been a cloud around us,” Cyclones head coach Matt Campbell said. “I think our kids said, ‘I’m sick of it, and we’re going to keep grinding, keep swinging and getting better one day at a time.’ So at the end of it, here we are.”

Kempt, a senior who had thrown two passes in his career before Saturday, played because regular starter Jacob Park went on leave for undisclosed personal medical reasons. The Cyclones remained confident, despite having lost 20 straight against ranked opponents.

Lanning, who switched from quarterback to linebacker in the offseason, played both positions Saturday. According to the Des Moines Register, he’s the first Iowa State player since 1971 to get significant action both ways in a game. He ran for 35 yards, passed for 25 and had eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. He played 78 snaps.

“Coming into an atmosphere like this, you can’t ask for anything better — especially playing both ways,” Lanning said. “It was fun. I can’t say enough about my teammates and what they did to help me out. It was a lot of stuff going on for me.”

It was the first loss for new Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley. Baker Mayfield passed for 306 yards and rushed for 57 for the Sooners (4-1, 1-1).

#1 Alabama 27, Texas A&M 19:

Damien Harris ran for 124 yards and a touchdown, and Jalen Hurts had a touchdown pass and ran for another score to help visiting Alabama (6-0. 3-0 SEC) remain undefeated. The Aggies (4-2, 2-1) made the game interesting, but in the end freshman quarterback Kellen Mond was too inexperienced to help them topple a team as talented as Alabama. Hurts threw for 123 yards and ran for 56.

#2 Clemson 28, Wake Forest 14:

Kelly Bryant threw for 200 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an ankle injury and the host Tigers (4-0 ACC) reached 6-0 for a third straight season.

#4 Penn St. 31, Northwestern 7:

Trace McSorley threw for 245 yards and a touchdown and Saquon Barkley ran for two scores in the second half for the visiting Nittany Lions (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten). Barkley scored on a 1-yard leap and 53-yard dash in the third quarter to make it 24-0.

#5 Georgia 45, Vanderbilt 14:

Nick Chubb ran for two touchdowns and 138 yards, and the visiting Bulldogs (6-0, 3-0 SEC) routed the Commodores (3-3, 0-3) despite missing three players from their stingy defense. Georgia is off to its best start since 2005. Chubb became the eighth player in SEC history to reach 4,000 yards rushing in his career.

Michigan St. 14, #7 Michigan 10:

Brian Lewerke ran for a touchdown and threw for a score in the first half and the visiting Spartans (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) held on to beat their in-state rival. The Wolverines (4-1, 1-1) had the ball with a chance to drive for a go-ahead TD, but a heave from the Spartans’ 37 as time expired hit the turf near the goal line.

#8 TCU 31, #23 W. Virginia 24:

Kenny Hill avoided a defender in the backfield and lunged through two more for a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:53 left and the host Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0) remained the Big 12’s only undefeated team. Hill also threw a 45-yard TD pass and was on the receiving end of a 48-yard score. Will Grier threw for 366 yards and three TDs for the Hokies (3-2, 1-1).

#9 Wisconsin 38, Nebraska 17:

#10 Ohio St. 62, Maryland 14:

J.T. Barrett threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in the first half, and the host Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) had their most dominant defensive effort in nearly 60 years. The stingy Buckeyes held the Terrapins (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) to 66 total yards, their fewest yards allowed since yielding 60 against Indiana in 1960.

#12 Auburn 44, Mississippi 23:

#13 Miami 24, Florida St. 20: Malik Rosier threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Langham with 6 seconds remaining and the visiting Hurricanes (4-0, 2-0 ACC) ended a seven-game losing streak in the series. Rosier, who came into the game leading the ACC in passing efficiency, had a rough start as he completed only four of his first 16 passes. The junior found a rhythm in the second half and finished 19-of-44 for 254 yards and three touchdowns. After the Seminoles (1-3, 1-2) took a 20-17 lead with 1:24 remaining on James Blackman’s 20-yard pass to Auden Tate, Rosier drove Miami (4-0, 2-0) 75 yards in nine plays.

#16 Virginia Tech 23, Boston College 10:

Josh Jackson threw for 322 yards and a touchdown and the visiting Hokies (5-1, 1-1 ACC) never trailed against Boston College (2-4, 0-2). Sean Savoy had nine catches for 139 yards and a score after receiver Cam Phillips went out with an apparent leg injury in the first quarter.

LSU 17, #21 Florida 16:

The Gators (3-2, 3-1 SEC) set an NCAA record by scoring in their 366th consecutive game, but Danny Etling threw a short touchdown pass in the second half and the Tigers (4-2, 1-1) rebounded from a stunning home loss to Troy with a win in Gainesville.

#19 San Diego State 41, UNLV 10:

#25 Central Florida 51, Cincinnati 23:

McKenzie Milton threw a careerhigh five touchdown passes, four in the first half, and Tre’Quan Smith scored four times as the visiting Knights (4-0, 2-0 American Athletic) rolled to a storm-shortened victory in their first game as a ranked team since 2013. Cincinnati (2-4, 0-2) has dropped three straight.

Western Michigan 71, Buffalo 68:

Jarvion Franklin ran in from the 12 to give the visiting Broncos the win in a record-tying seven overtimes with a record-breaking 139 total points.
