Bellarmine toughs out win over Riordan

- By Mitch Stephens

Nobody could remember the last time Bellarmine lost four games in a row, and Austin Ajiake made sure that it didn’t happen now.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior running back and linebacker did it all during a tough 21-14 West Catholic Athletic League win over Riordan at City College of San Francisco on Saturday.

Ajiake rushed 29 times for 188 yards and two touchdowns as the Bells (3-3, 1-2), riding a three-game skid, hung on after taking a 21-0 lead late in the third quarter. Bellarmine‘s third touchdown was a 34-yard run by Tyson Garcia.

But Marcus Williams responded for Riordan with a 69-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Riordan (1-5, 0-3) closed to 21-14 with three minutes left on Joshua Miles’ 1-yard TD plunge.

Bellarmine went three-and-out, Riordan took over with a chance to tie, but Ajiake snagged an interception. Riordan quarterback Travis Benham completed 11 passes for 121 yards.

More game suspensions: Two more games were suspended Friday night for off-the-field problems.

The Oakland Athletic League game between Skyline and host Oakland Tech was stopped in the third quarter due to fights outside the stadium. Skyline led 7-6 and OAL Commissioner Alphonso Powell said how the game’s outcome will be determined “has yet to be determined.” It will be deemed no-contest (neither team receives a win or loss), be decided with a California tie-breaker, or Skyline, with the lead at the time of stoppage, will get the win.

Last week’s Kennedy-Richmond game at El Cerrito game was stopped at halftime due to fights in the stands and outside the stadium. El Cerrito led 20-14, but it was deemed no-contest.

No fans were allowed in the stands Saturday afternoon for Berkeley’s 32-13 win over Tennyson-Hayward. The game was postponed Friday night because of social media threats of “trouble.” Berkeley coach CJ Johnson said neither schools’ students made the threats.
