John Milton McCuskey, M.D.

-

John Milton McCuskey, M.D., died at age 83 peacefully at home with his wife, Sarah, by his side. He had struggled with Parkinson’s Disease with great acceptance and courage for over 17 years.

John was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois where he grew up with a love of nature and farming. He graduated from DePauw University where he was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity. John completed his medical training and residency at Tulane University, spending 10 years in New Orleans, LA. Afterwards, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent 2 years at the American Hospital in Paris and the remainder of his service in Germany.

John returned to the U.S., drawn to the excitement, multiculturalism and natural beauty of San Francisco. He opened a private practice in internal medicine at 450 Sutter St. where he practiced full-time for almost 40 years, working part-time at 490 Post at the end of his medical career. John truly loved being a doctor, firmly believing in the healing power of the doctor-patient relationship. He was one of his generation of physicians to continue making home visits with his patients. John loved his patients, from all walks of life, and was committed to helping each one.

John was a caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was genuinely interested in people and loved hearing their stories. John had a lively curiosity in all aspects of life. He particularly enjoyed the out-of-doors, tending to his fruit trees and bees and hiking with family and friends. John also loved art, visiting museums and galleries, walking to them on his lunch hour with a crisp apple in hand. We will truly miss him.

John is survived by Sarah, his wife of 45 years, his two children Matthew and Heather (David Hay) and his two beloved granddaughters Ellie and Emmie. He also leaves his brother Martin McCuskey and family, sisters-in-law Kay Thorkilson and Julie Richardson and family, and brother-in-law Howard Thorkilson and family.

The family is very thankful for the kind, loving care of John by Cathy Tolentino, Marc Casayuran, H.D. Richards, Tim Veisamasama and Ike Largo.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 1pm at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 2515 Fillmore St., San Francisco. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donation in John’s name be made to the charity closest to one’s heart.
