ESPN’s on the wrong side of fight

-

When ESPN sportscaster Jemele Hill tweeted about the NFL protests and boycotting, she was suspended by the network for two weeks for violating its “social media guidelines.” To make matters worse, President Trump decided to weigh in and bash Hill on Twitter the next day, blaming her for ESPN’s low ratings. It’s even more ridiculous when Trump seems to be more concerned with tweeting about the NFL than addressing California’s increasingly devastating wildfires.

When Hill advised those who “feel strongly” about the protests to boycott advertisers with owner Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys, it must have immediately sent up a red flag at ESPN. The network has been fighting a losing battle in an effort to keep both sides of the NFL protests happy and instead, with Trump’s help, has succeeded only in further alienating viewers. Suspending Hill over her opinions about boycotting injustice however, places ESPN on the wrong side of this fight. Spencer Whitney, assistant editor
