LeBron might miss opener: ankle injury
LeBron James won’t play again in the preseason because of a sprained left ankle, and his status for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ season opener is in doubt.
James aggravated his ankle while making his exhibition debut Tuesday night against Chicago. He scored 17 points and had eight turnovers as the Cavaliers fell to 0-4. He did not practice Wednesday and head coach Tyronn Lue said the four-time MVP won’t practice Thursday or play in Friday’s preseason finale at Orlando.
The Cavs open the regular season Tuesday against the Boston Celtics and former Cleveland guard Kyrie Irving.
Citing league sources, ESPN reported that Indiana Pacers forward Glenn Robinson III will undergo surgery on his injured left ankle and is expected to be sidelined until mid-December. Robinson hurt the ankle in a scrimmage Sept. 29.
The Minnesota Timberwolves signed Andrew Wiggins to a contract extension. Terms were not disclosed, but owner Glen Taylor said in August that he had offered Wiggins a five-year max contract worth $148 million.
Soccer: Stanford’s Andi Sullivan was one of 22 players called up to join the U.S. women’s national team for games against South Korea next Thursday in New Orleans and Oct. 22 in North Carolina.
Also on the team are Cardinal alums Jane Campbell, Kelley O’Hara and Christen Press.
In the NASL, Dagoberto’s goal in the 81st minute lifted the S.F. Deltas to a 2-1 victory over Indy Eleven at Kezar Stadium.
In MLS play, Tomas Martinez scored in the 63rd minute and his free kick in the 77th led to an own goal, helping host Houston (12-10-10) pick up a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City (12-8-12).
Colleges: Gyree Durante, a backup quarterback for Division III Albright College in Pennsylvania, has been cut for kneeling during the national anthem.
Tennis: Italy’s Fabio Fognini was handed a suspended ban of two Grand Slam tournaments for insulting a chair umpire at the U.S. Open. He will be suspended if he commits another major offense before the end of 2019. Fognini also was fined $96,000, which will be reduced to $48,000 if he stays on good behavior for the next two years.
Obituary: Former Eagles wide receiver Ben Hawkins, 73, died Monday, the team said. It did not disclose a cause of death. Mr. Hawkins spent eight of his nine NFL seasons with Philadelphia, where he played 102 games (67 starts) from 1966 through ’73.
