Art and poetry in Emeryville

- — Maxine Marshall

Poet Sarah Kobrinsky writes Emeryville. She’s got poems about the shellmound, about Ikea. She’s even written about getting priced out of the neighborhood and moving to Richmond. The move took place, ironically, while she was serving as Emeryville’s second ever poet laureate. Kobrinsky was at the helm when the city started its “Poems on the Emery Go-Round” project, which featured monthly poems from various writers on the shuttle buses. This spirit of engagement with resident artists is alive and well in Emeryville.

This month, the enclave celebrates its 31st annual Emeryville Art Exhibition, a juried show of local artists and craftspeople open through Oct. 29. On Sunday, Oct. 15, Kobrinsky and other poets, including Sacramento’s Poet Laureate Indigo Moore, read their works against the backdrop of the exhibition’s paintings, sculptures and photographs.

Fun fact: Kobrinsky’s husband, ceramic artist Jered Nelson, is a contributor.
