Laughing off death
If you think your job is tough, La Muerte (“Death”) in “La Muerte Baila” would probably trade with you.
“Imagine everyone fighting just to keep you away,” he says near the top of Teatro Visión’s Día de los Muertos comedy, the San Jose company’s first show since 2012 other than its original adaptation of “Macario.”
In the play, which Rebecca Martinez devised with the Portland, Ore., ensemble Milagro in 2015, La Muerte (Sergio Dávila) can’t wait for El Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) because it’s his one day off, when he gets to chill among the land of the living. But one of the ghosts is obstructing the path to the waking world.
The play features live son jarocho music, and is performed in Spanish with English supertitles. Rodrigo García, the company’s new leader, directs.
