Warriors fans of a certain age can remember when the team played its games at the Cow Palace. In a couple of years, the Dubs will have a new home that’s more like an actual palace.

In 2019, the Warriors will move across the bay to the privately funded Chase Center, a sparkling new $1 billion building being built along the waterfront at Mission Bay. Owner Joe Lacob and the rest of the ownership group have plans for the 18,000-seat building to be every bit as state of the art as the team itself. The technology will be worthy of Silicon Valley, with interactive features that will allow fans to post photos and videos that can be seen on the scoreboards, as well as get up-to-the-second game data and statistics.

There will be a multitude of dining options inside the arena and out, where there will be a 35,000-square-foot public plaza with shops, restaurants and a waterfront park. Plans call for 950 on-site parking spaces, which means public transportation will be a smart way to get to games and events. Muni has a stop at the arena, with connections to BART and Caltrain, and Caltrain’s Fourth and King Station will be a half-mile walk from the arena.

The Warriors won’t be the only stars to perform at Chase Center. The arena is expected to host as many as 190 concerts and other events per year. But the main draw will be the team, which is why Kevin Durant and Steve Kerr were on hand for the groundbreaking in January. There is no guarantee that the Warriors will still be the cream of the NBA crop by the time Chase Center opens, of course, but the architects would be wise to design plenty of space for future championship banners.
