-

Donald (Don) Major Smedley, 80, passed away peacefully at his home in San Francisco, California on Monday, October 9, 2017. He was born on December 13, 1936 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania to the apple of his eye, Ms. Josephine Crawford, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving as one of the finest Marines (Semper-Fidelis - Always Faithful) until his honorable discharge 3 years later in San Francisco, California. San Francisco is the city he truly loved and made it his home. After 32 years of service, he retired from MUNI Transit. He was also a member of three Masonic Chapters including the Noble Stutmose Temple #74, the Subline Pine of Golden Gate Consistory #295, and the Past Master of Victoria Lodge #3.

Don was the true definition of a Father and was proudly known as Daddy to his girls. He is a real Bay Area man who enjoyed bowling, fishing, cooking, horse races, attending all the SF 49er home games, and of course he enjoyed what he called a good night-cap (glass of wine) while burning incense and listening to music. Such a beautiful Man, outstanding husband, selfless Father, and the best Pee-paw ever … that’s Don Smedley!

His legacy to cherish in memory includes his wife, Dorothy; his adult children Cheryl, Valerie and spouse, Monique, Kamilah, Donna, Josephine, Melinda and spouse; his 17 grandchildren; his 7 great grandchildren; his baby sister Jeannie; his first cousin Rose; several nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives and friends.

Don now joins his mother, two brothers Richard and Norman, and sister Joan, along with his close friends, in heaven. Don was a true humanitarian in every meaning of the word, and who is loved unconditionally by his family, friends, and the community! He was a giving person who shared his heart of gold, which will never be forgotten!!

Friends may visit on Monday, October 16, 2017 from 4-9pm and attend a Quiet Hour at 7pm at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City, CA 94014. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 11am also at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary.
