Teresa Maggio, 94 years old and a San Francisco resident, died at home on Saturday morning, October 21, of Alzheimer’s.

She was born in Santo Stefano D’Aveto, in the mountains of Liguria, Italy to Carmella Casella and Marco Barattini. She grew up in the farmhouse built by her father in the mountain village of Romezzano with her brothers, Giulio, Giovanni and Luigi. The only daughter, she was taught by her father to make pasta by hand when she was only ten years old. And after decades of perfecting this art, she was known for her ravioli, lasagne and tagliarini which were enthusiastically enjoyed by family and friends. Her pizza, focaccia, pesto and spaghetti sauces were appreciated by all and she lovingly taught her grandchildren some of her recipes.

Teresa was a quiet woman with an eye for dressing simply and elegantly. In her younger years, she spent many afternoons with her good friend, Angelina, who was a seamstress in San Francisco, and helped her improve her sewing skills. Teresa sewed clothes for herself and her family, and knitted slippers and crocheted blankets. She paid careful attention to detail in everything she did and was an excellent homemaker.

Not many people know that beyond Teresa’s quiet demeanor was a woman who loved and felt deeply. When her only son died in 2008, she grieved for him quietly while she focused on running the house and taking care of her husband. She was the backbone and strength of her family.

Teresa married Pasquale Maggio in 1943 and had children, Rose (b. 1944) and Angelo (b. 1947). In 1956, she immigrated with her family to Lodi, California and her daughter, Julie Ann, was born in 1958. In 1959, Teresa and Pasquale brought the family to San Francisco. They first resided in Potrero Hill and later moved to the Portola District in 1982 where Teresa resided until her death.

Teresa is predeceased by her husband, Pasquale Maggio (d: 2016), her son Angelo Maggio (d: 2008), and is survived by her daughters, Rose Rolle and Julie Ann Maggio; sons-inlaw, Richard Rolle and Steve Collupy; grandchildren, Paul Rolle, Christine Damico, John Rolle, Michael Rolle, and their spouses, Lisa Rolle, Joe Damico, Renee Rolle and Elisa Rolle. She is also survived by nine greatgrandchildren, Vanessa, Nicholas, Ricky, Annie, Dominic, Jack, Jacob, Alessandra and Dario. In Italy, she is survived by her brother, Luigi Barattini, her niece, Alessandra Barattini, her great-nephew, Fabrizio Civardi, his wife, Chiara and daughter, Alice, her sistersin-law, Caterina and Maria Maggio and numerous other relatives. Teresa’s family would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to her caregivers, Mariesa Ignas and Zoila Garcia, who took loving care of Teresa during her illness.

The visitation for Teresa will be on Thursday, October 26, beginning at 5pm, followed by the rosary at 7pm at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, October 27 at 10:30am at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 459 Somerset Street in San Francisco. The interment will follow at the Italian Cemetery, 540 F Street in Colma.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity.
