Ribs sore, but Foster ‘should be good to go’

Reuben Foster is sore, but he won’t be sidelined.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that the rookie inside linebacker is expected to play Sunday at Philadelphia. The statement came a day after Foster exited a 40-10 loss to the Cowboys late in the third quarter with a rib injury.

“He should be good to go,” Shanahan said. “We’ll recheck it tomorrow. He was real sore today. But the MRI and X-rays were negative.”

Foster, who missed five games with a high ankle sprain suffered in the season opener, had five tackles against Dallas in his return to action.

In other injury news, Shanahan said cornerback K’Waun Williams (quadriceps) is “not very likely” to play against Philadelphia and right guard Brandon Fusco (biceps) is questionable. In addition, right tackle Trent Brown is in the concussion protocol.

If Fusco is unable to play, Zane Beadles, who was benched after he started the season opener, and undrafted rookie Erik Magnuson are the top candidates to replace him.

On Sunday, after Williams was injured, Jimmie Ward moved from safety to take his spot at slot cornerback and rookie Adrian Colbert played safety. However, Shanahan said he preferred to keep Ward at free safety and said there is a good chance the 49ers will re-sign Leon Hall, 32. The 11-year veteran was released last week after he was inactive for his only game with the team.

“Jimmie’s got a lot of versatility, but I also don’t want to keep messing with Jimmie and changing between positions every series,” Shanahan said. “I’d like for him to stay at a spot and really have a chance to own that and get very good at it.”

D-line reinforcement: A week after signing two linemen to assist their injury-ravaged defensive front, the 49ers signed 2013 first-round pick Datone Jones, NFL Network reported.

Jones, a defensive end who was the No. 26 overall pick by the Packers in 2013, spent his first four seasons in Green Bay. He was released by the Vikings on Sept. 8. Last week, he was released by the Lions after spending one week with the team.

Jones has 54 tackles, nine sacks and an interception in his nine-start career.

Last week, the 49ers signed defensive linemen Tony McDaniel and Leger Douzable, and they both played extensively Sunday. Douzable played 47 snaps and McDaniel logged 25 as the 49ers allowed 265 rushing yards and 6.2 yards per carry.

Defensive linemen Arik Armstead, Tank Carradine and Ronald Blair are on injured reserve. Aaron Lynch was out Sunday with a calf injury.
