Tavares, Isles keep Coyotes winless

John Tavares completed a hat trick with a tie-breaking score in the third period, lifting the host New York Islanders over winless Arizona 5-3 on Tuesday night.

New York extended its win streak to three games.

“He was good. Obviously, he was on the puck,” New York head coach Doug Weight said of Tavares. “He led us tonight. We needed his leadership.”

Arizona fell to 0-8-1 under new head coach Rick Tocchet.

Avalanche 5, Stars 3: Former Sharks wing Matt Nieto had his first career hat trick as host Colorado ended a three-game skid by snapping Dallas’ four-game winning streak. Stars defenseman Stephen Johns left in the first period with an upper-body injury.

Golden Knights 4, Blackhawks 2: Tomas Nosek had a goal and an assist as host Vegas improved to 7-1, extending the best start by an expansion team in NHL history.

Canadiens 5, Panthers 1: Shea Weber scored twice to help host Montreal end a seven-game skid. Carey Price made 26 saves for the Canadiens, who had not won since their season opener.

Penguins 2, Oilers 1: Phil Kessel scored 42 seconds into overtime for host Pittsburgh, which lost defenseman Justin Schultz to a concussion after he was elbowed in the head.

Lightning 5, Hurricanes 1: Nikita Kucherov scored his 11th goal and Steven Stamkos had two assists, giving both players 10-game points streaks, as visiting Tampa Bay improved to 8-1-1.

Kings 3, Senators 2: Adrian Kempe scored the shootout winner to help visiting Los Angeles improve to 7-1-1.

Flames 3, Predators 2: Matthew Tkachuk scored the decisive goal in the shootout for visiting Calgary.

Canucks 1, Wild 0: Jake Virtanen scored midway through the third period and Anders Nilsson made 29 saves for his second shutout in three games for visiting Vancouver.

Sabres 1, Red Wings 0: Benoit Pouliot scored midway through the second period and Robin Lehner made 32 saves for host Buffalo.
