Gloria de los Angeles Gutiérrez, 90, passed away on October 25th, 2017 at her home in the Excelsior District of San Francisco, surrounded by her family. Doña Gloria was born in Managua, Nicaragua on March 23, 1927, to Jose Dolores Berrios and Juana Alarcón. She is survived by four of her children and their spouses: Ileana, Gloria (Jorge), Sergio (Glenda), and Oscar (Judith). She was predecease­d by her husband H. Rolando Gutiérrez and her eldest son Rolando. She is also survived by six grandchild­ren: José (Christine), Oscar (Ayako), Jorge, Claudette (Daniel), Hazel and Alyeska; and four great-grandchild­ren: Cyrus, Gabriela, Alexandra, and Cade.

Doña Gloria was orphaned at age 3 and raised by her beloved aunt, Mamelia. She learned shorthand and worked at City Hall in Managua, where she met the love of her life, Rolando Gutiérrez. They married on July 16, 1949 and their marriage endured 53 years, through 2 major earthquake­s in two different countries, a civil war, dislocatio­n, immigratio­n, and innumerabl­e hardships. She designed children’s clothes before emigrating with her family to San Francisco in 1979, after the Civil War erupted in Nicaragua. She raised 5 children and was regarded as a second mother to her 6 grandchild­ren and 4 great-grandchild­ren. She was known to all as Mami and was our cherished, beloved matriarch.

Viewing and service will be held at Driscoll’s 1465 Valencia St, San Francisco Tuesday, Oct 31st 3-9pm and Wednesday, Nov 1st at 10.
