Benched cornerback Rashard Robinson traded to the Jets.

Rashard Robinson, who began 2017 as the 49ers’ No. 1 cornerback and was benched last week amid a season filled with penalties, was traded to the Jets on Tuesday for a fifthround pick.

Robinson, a 2016 fourthround pick, started the first seven games before he was replaced by rookie thirdround pick Ahkello Witherspoon in Sunday’s 33-10 loss in Philadelphia.

Robinson played just 16 defensive snaps Sunday, but still drew two penalties on special teams, boosting his NFL-high total to 10. Among his infractions were four passinterference penalties and two for illegal use of hands.

Robinson, who was kicked off the team at LSU, had stayed out of trouble in the NFL and had drawn generally positive reviews from teammates and coaches for his confidence and trash-talking. However, he did throw his helmet in frustration on the sideline during a 40-10 home loss to the Cowboys on Oct. 22. At one point, Robinson gestured in frustration at rookie safety Adrian Colbert after wideout Dez Bryant caught a short touchdown pass.

Former 49ers general manager Trent Baalke selected Robinson two picks before the Cowboys used the No. 135 selection on quarterback Dak

Prescott, the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. More moves: The 49ers released cornerback Will Redmond from injured reserve. Redmond, the No. 68 pick in 2016, was a surprising selection who was rehabilitating from a torn ACL when he was drafted. He has yet to play a regular-season snap in the NFL. He was placed on injured reserve because of an ankle injury after he was sidelined last year because of the knee injury that dated to college.

In addition, the 49ers officially released quarterback

Brian Hoyer, a move that was expected after they traded for New England quarterback

Jimmy Garoppolo on Monday.
