Teen’s gaffe benefits Man U

-

Manchester United sealed its fourth straight win in Champions League Group A by beating Benfica 2-0 on Tuesday after another moment to forget for teenage goalkeeper Mile Svilar.

Two weeks after carrying the ball over his goal line to gift United a 1-0 win in Lisbon, the 18-year-old endured the misfortune of conceding an own goal in the 45th minute at Old Trafford. Nemanja Matic’s long-range shot struck the post, rebounded onto the shoulder of the diving goalkeeper, and deflected into the net.

United needs one point to advance. Benfica has lost all four of its games.

CSKA Moscow clawed back into contention with a comefrom-behind 2-1 win at Basel. The two teams each have six points. Group B: Left back Layvin Kurzawa scored a second-half hat trick as host Paris SaintGermain crushed Anderlecht 5-0 to reach the knockout stages.

Brazil’s Neymar, after fluffing his earlier shots, made it 2-0 deep into first-half stoppage time with a fine strike from the edge of the penalty area.

Bayern Munich qualified for the knockout stage and eliminated host Celtic with a 2-1 win over the Scottish champion, sealed by Javi Martinez’s 77thminute goal. Group C: Stephan El Shaarawy scored two impressive goals and host Roma outclassed Chelsea for a surprisingly one-sided 3-0 win, which prevented the English Premier League champion from advancing.

Roma replaced Chelsea atop Group C with eight points, one more than the London team.

Atlético Madrid was held by 10-man Qarabag to a 1-1 draw, damaging the host’s chances of advancing to the knockout stages. Atlético, winless after four matches, trails secondplace Chelsea by four points. Group D: Olympiakos held visiting Barcelona to a surprise 0-0 draw, denying the visitors early qualification to the round of 16 from Group D.

Gonzalo Higuain scored a late equalizer as visiting Juventus drew with Sporting Lisbon 1-1 to remain ahead in the group standings. Crew win in MLS: Artur started a three-goal outburst in the second half after New York City FC went down a man and host Columbus won the first leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals 4-1. The second leg of the two-game aggregate series is Sunday in New York City.
