Rustic roots blend with modern amenities at redwood farmhouse in Glen Ellen
Ahome built in the 1800s is bound to have stories to tell. And one with newspapers for insulation literally has stories coming out of the walls.
“When we went into the walls to update the insulation, we discovered they had used newspapers from 1895,” seller Lynn Ganz said.
Such is the case for 7390 Sonoma Mountain Road, a redwood farmhouse amid the groves of Glen Ellen. The 9.62-acre parcel surrounds the 19th century farmhouse. The contemporary aesthetic yields modern amenities while still embracing the home’s rustic roots.
“We decided we’re not turning it into a suburban home in the country,” Ganz said. “We’re not trying to turn it into something other than what it is.”
The restored home blends classical details with modern conveniences. Thick moldings and divided light windows adorn an interior finished with wide-plank hardwood flooring.

“It’s a legacy property shaped by years of laughter, love and celebration,” said Maurice Tegelaar of Pacific Union Real Estate, who is co-listing the three-bedroom home with Matt Sevenau for $4.95 million
Set on the border of Jack London State Historic Park, the estate includes a private spring, a creek and an amphitheater that seats 200 people. That amphitheater, set among the third-generation redwoods, hosted their daughter’s wedding.
A curved pool rests within a flagstone patio beside the home. Willow trees and verdant lawns stretch beside the pool. Nearby, the outdoor kitchen and pool house fashion an ideal stage for outdoor entertaining.
In the home, the carpeted bedrooms offer woodpaneled walls awash in natural light. An upstairs bedroom features vaults in a ceiling shaped by the roofline and Dormer windows. The office has built-in shelves
and ceiling speakers. Lights within the cabinets brighten the office and illuminate books and artwork adorning the shelves.
The property also includes a pair of cottages. The first is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom with a kitchenette that’s adjacent to the main house. The other is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage offering a private entrance and stone patio.
Finishing the estate is an auxiliary building with four units that includes a half bathroom, office, workshop, gym and a living room/ study.
