Kim leads PGA event in Vegas

Kim Meen- Whee birdied two of his final three holes for a 6- under- par 65 and a one- stroke lead Thursday at the PGA Tour’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

The 25- year- old South Korean player birdied all three par- 5 holes at TPC Summerlin, Nos. 13 and 16 on his first nine and No. 9 on his second nine.

Kim was fourth two weeks ago in South Korea in the PGA Tour’s CJ Cup.

John Huh was at 66 with J. J. Spaun, Ryan Blaum and Alex Cejka. Jimmy Stanger also was 5- under with three holes left when play was suspended because of darkness.

Joost Luiten, Haydn Porteous and Nicolas Colsaerts shot 7under 64s to tie for the lead after the first round of the European Tour’s Turkish Airlines Open in Antalya.

Saiki Fujita, Ai Suzuki, Nasa Hataoka, Lizette Salas, Jane Park, Min- Young Lee and Shanshan Feng each carded a 6- under 66 on Friday and shared the first- round lead of the LPGA Tour’s Japan Classic in Ibaraki.

ELSEWHERE Nadal advances to Paris quarters

Rafael Nadal remains on track for an elusive Paris Masters title after beating Pablo Cuevas 6- 3, 6- 7 ( 5), 6- 3 to reach the quarterfin­als.

Nadal has not reached the final since losing to David Nalbandian in his first appearance 10 years ago. Nadal next plays qualifier Filip Krajinovic.

Nadal is guaranteed to finish the year with the top ranking for the fourth time. A maiden victory in Paris would give him a record 31 Masters titles, one more than Novak Djokovic.

CoCo Vandeweghe, Ashleigh Barty and Anastasija Sevastova advanced to the semifinals at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, China.

Soccer: Foster Langdorf’s 11th goal of the season opened the scoring for Stanford and the host Cardinal ( 13- 2- 1, 7- 0- 1 Pac- 12) cruised to a 5- 1 win over UCLA ( 7- 8- 1, 4- 4- 0). Stanford clinched its fourth consecutiv­e Pac- 12 title.

Clint Dempsey scored both goals as host Seattle beat Vancouver 2- 0 to advance to the MLSWestern Conference finals. The defending MLS Cup champion Sounders will face Houston or Portland.

AC Milan wasted a chance to make the Europa League knockout stage with two games to spare after AEK Athens held it to a second straight goalless draw. The other favorite, Arsenal, advanced despite also being in a goalless game.

In an unusual incident, Marseille substitute Patrice Evra was given a red card before his game in Portugal because of a clash with the crowd. A photo showed him aiming a kick at a fan’s head after reported arguments between him and Marseille supporters. Marseille lost to Vitoria 1- 0.

College basketball: Reid Travis scored 24 points, and host Stanford shot 58 percent from the floor in a 91- 81 exhibition win over Chico State.

Georgia Tech suspended starters Tadric Jackson, a senior guard, and Josh Okogie, a sophomore forward, indefinite­ly after learning they accepted benefits in violation of NCAA rules. Georgia Tech says the two players will not accompany the team to China for its season opener against UCLA next Friday. The NCAA will determine the length of the suspension­s.

The school said it reported to the NCAA results of its internal investigat­ion, which showed Jackson and Okogie received apparel, meals and transporta­tion valued at less than $ 525 and less than $ 750, respective­ly, from a person whose identity was not revealed.

Kentucky says freshman guard Jemarl Baker will miss three months. He had surgery on his left knee last week.

Rutgers has given Hall of Fame women’s head coach C. Vivian Stringer a four- year contract extension. Stringer, 69, is a week from beginning her 23rd season leading the Scarlet Knights. Stringer has a 977- 390 career record over 46 seasons.
