NEWS OF THE DAY
1 Officer killed:
An offduty Washington, D.C., police sergeant was fatally shot while sitting in a parked car in Baltimore, and a woman with him was injured. Baltimore officers found Tony Anthony Mason Jr., 40, with gunshot wounds early Saturday. He died of his injuries at a hospital. The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington said Mason was a 17-year veteran of the force. The second victim, a 43year-old woman, suffered a gunshot wound to her leg. Investigators believe Mason and the woman were inside the car when an unknown person approached, began shooting and then fled. No information about a motive was released.
2 Pledge death:
Police are investigating the death of a Florida State University fraternity pledge at a chapter party. Tallahassee police said no one has been arrested in Friday’s death of the Pi Kappa Phi pledge Andrew Coffey, 20, at an off-campus house party. The Tallahassee Democrat reported that officers collected alcoholic beverage bottles that were scattered on the home’s porch as evidence. The fraternity has been suspended by its national organization pending the conclusion of the investigation.
3 Children assaulted:
Authorities in North Carolina have charged a man they say used his ice cream truck to lure and assault children. Isam Fathee Mohamed Rahmah, 51, is wanted on multiple charges of first-degree kidnapping and indecent liberties with a child, Durham police said. Two boys have reported being sexually assaulted by Rahmah inside the truck in separate incidents in late October. Authorities say they’re searching for Rahmah and his vehicle, a red Ford van with pictures of Popsicles decorated on the side and back.
4 Child abuse:
The top administrator at the Kansas Department for Children and Families plans to retire Dec. 1 after months of scrutiny of the agency’s oversight of services for abused and neglected children. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s office announced Phyllis Gilmore’s retirement Friday and said her nearly six-year tenure had “transformed the department into an agency of opportunity” to combat childhood poverty and help poor and disabled adults. But Democratic legislators have been calling for Gilmore to step down since a scathing state audit of the foster care system in July 2016 concluded that Kansas was putting vulnerable children at risk by struggling to provide adequate oversight for contractors providing services.
5 Senator assaulted:
A man has been arrested and charged with assaulting and injuring Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. State Police said in a release Saturday that Paul suffered a minor injury when Rene Boucher, 59, assaulted him at his Warren County home Friday. The release did not provide details of the assault or the nature of Paul’s injury. In a statement, Paul spokeswoman Kelsey Cooper said the Republican senator is “fine,” but she did not provide further details. Boucher, of Bowling Green, is charged with fourth-degree assault with a minor injury. He is being held in jail on $5,000 bond.
