Alfred Aloysius McCarthy

-

Our beloved Father Al McCarthy passed away peacefully in his home on November 2 surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 30, 1927, Al was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn, and his parents (Denis and Nora) and three siblings (Mary Ellen Strachan, James, and Rita Carella)

Al and Marilyn’s love story was one for the books. They met as partners in a wedding and the rest is history. They were married at Holy Name of Jesus Church on April 25th, 1953. Our Dad cherished our Mom every day until her death last year. This Irish union produced seven children: Karen, Therese Conolly (James), Mike (Dianne), Brian (Denise), Noreen Mullen (Brian), Tim (Anna), and Kevin (Lara). Al’s true joy was family (as seen in his thirteen Grandchildren: Megan, Erin, Allison, Emily, Kelly, Stephanie, Nicole, Jeffrey, Conor, Kate, Clare, Colin, and Mia. Al was also loved by his many nieces and nephews.

Al was a true native San Franciscan growing up in the Ingleside District, and knowing every street in the city and exactly how to get there. He attended Corpus Christi School, St. Peter’s High School and Mission High school.

After high school, Al joined the Merchant Marines where he served until 1948. Upon discharge he joined the SFPD for a time, was drafted in 1951 during the Korean conflict, and returned in 1953 to become a member of the SFFD until his retirement in 1979, as a lieutenant. It was through the Fire Department that Al developed many of his lifelong friendships. After retirement, Al faithfully volunteered for the Toys for Tots program.

Al was a true Irish gentlemen with a twinkle in his eyes. Our hearts are broken but also filled with love and wonderful memories. We will love you forever Dad. Rest in Peace

A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy of Name of Jesus Church, 39th & Lawton in SF, on Friday, November 10th. Visitation will start at 10:30AM with Mass to follow at 11AM. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers our family would like to request that donations be made to the San Francisco Firefighters Toys for Tots program at www.sffirefighterstoys.org
