The new month brings a new documentary on the history of Rolling Stone, marking its 50th anniversary this year and recently put up for sale by Jann Wenner, subject of a new biography he apparently doesn’t like. The new doc is co-directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney. The National Geographic Channel has put a lot of work into its new series “The Long Road Home,” based on the book of the same name by ABC News’ Martha Raddatz. It’s about what happens to vets and their families after they return home from battle.
SUNDAY, NOV. 5
Reelz will air the documentary “JFK: The Smoking Gun” at 3 p.m. today, a two-hour film based on more than four years of research by veteran police detective Colin McLaren. The film’s title is repulsive. The Oakland Raiders will be in Miami to play the Dolphins on“Football Night in America” at 5:30 p.m. on NBC. Season 10 of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” launches on Bravo at 8 p.m. Guy Fieri launches a new six-episode show on the Food Network called “Guy’s Big Project” at 9 p.m. Fieri and his team will help people develop their ideas on creating new food destinations. Showtime’s endearing and enduring hit “Shameless” revs up for season eight at 9 p.m.
It will be followed at 10 p.m. by the premiere of “SMILF,” starring and developed by Frankie Shaw as Brigette, a young woman from South Boston trying to balance a personal and professional life with being a young single mother.
“White Famous” follows in its new time slot of 10:30 p.m. The second season of “Ride With
Norman Reedus” premieres at a special night and time of 11 p.m. on AMC.

Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney co-directs “Rolling Stone: Stories From
the Edge,” airing in two parts tonight and Tuesday on HBO. Blair Foster is the co-director of the film, which probes the rich history of the magazine, its impact on culture over the past 50 years, the evolution of the magazine from music to a wider playing field and, of course, the proving ground for great writing. The two-hour first part airs at 9 p.m. The film is nothing if not timely, given that this is the 50th anniversary of the magazine, that a new biography of Jann Wenner has just been published and Wenner has put the magazine up for sale.
Decades looks back at a time when Walter Cronkite was the “most trusted man in America” in the original documentary “Eye on the World: The Rise of Walter Cronkite and the Evening
News.” This is an encore presentation of the film that first aired on Decades on Friday, Nov. 3.

The Bay Area recently lost a tiny giant, film critic Judy Stone, whose brilliance often graced the pages of The Chronicle. While making a name for herself and then some, she was the younger sister of the great I.F. Stone, the great investigative journalist who has inspired the documentary “All Governments Lie: Truth, Deception and the Spirit of I.F. Stone,” produced by Oliver Stone, directed by Emmy winner Fred Peabody and airing at 9 p.m. on Starz. The film spotlights people such as Amy Goodman, Carl Bernstein, Michael Moore, Chris Hedges and Ralph Nader, among others, who tilt at windmills because they are sure they are producing more than air, hot or otherwise. Season four of “Holiday Baking
Championships” heats up the oven on the Food Network at 9 p.m. with an episode on holiday party delights. It will be followed by the kickoff of “Christmas Cookie Challenge” at 10. “Long Island Medium” channels season 10 on TLC at 9 p.m. “Ride With Norman Reedus” moves to its regular 9 p.m. time slot on AMC. “Max Grundy” premieres on Discovery at 10 p.m. focusing on designer and builder Grundy, who creates one-of-a-kind restorations of classic cars and trucks.
TLC launches “The Healer” at 10 p.m., looking at the work of Charles Goldsmith, who insists that he can heal people with energy. David Suchet isn’t making any more “Poirot” mysteries, but he is featured in the documentary “Poirot: Super Sleuths,” available for streaming today on Acorn TV. The 2006 film traces Agatha Christie’s most famous creation from page to screen and includes interviews with actors and others who have been instrumental in helping the little Belgian make that journey. Also available on Acorn is the exclusive U.S. premiere of “Rebecka Martinsson,” an eight-part drama based on Asa Larsson’s crime novels about a Stockholm lawyer (played by Ida Engvoll) who is drawn into a mystery when a friend from childhood passes away. “Bargain Mansions” premieres on DIY at 9 p.m. Part two of “Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge” airs at 9 p.m. on HBO. Martha Raddatz, chief foreign affairs reporter for ABC and simply one of the best, most committed journalists on TV (or any platform, for that matter), authored a best-selling book called “The Long Road Home,” which has been made into an eight-part film premiering tonight on the National Geographic Channel. The film stars Jason Ritter, Michael Kelly, Kate Bosworth, Jeremy
Sisto and others and focuses on the aftermath of an ambush in 2004 in Iraq when eight Americans were killed and 65 seriously wounded.
The limited series looks at the toll war can take on both soldiers and their families long after the battles have grown silent.
Nat Geo will air a two-part premiere at 9 p.m. tonight before the series moves to its regular time slot of 10 p.m. on Nov. 14.
USA premieres the period drama “Damnation” at 10 p.m., starring Killian
Scott as a man who pretends to be a small-town preacher in the 1930s but is really planning a huge insurrection against an industrial tycoon. Class will come to disorder as “Teachers” resumes new episodes on TV Land at 10 p.m.

Put a hitch in your giddy-up and get ready for the 51st annual “Country Music Association Awards” at 8 p.m. on ABC. Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley host the three-hour event in Nashville. Miranda Lambert is up for five awards. Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Chris Stapleton and Keith Urban are up for entertainer of the year.
Race car driver Danica Patrick is the subject of an Epix documentary called “Danica,” of course, at 8 p.m.
The Food Network airs “Iron Chef: Where Are They Now,” a special, at 8 p.m., followed by “Iron Chef Showdown: Big Thanksgiving Battle” at 9 and the premiere of “Iron Chef:
Big Thanksgiving Battle: Behind the Battle” at 10. After that, they should air “Iron Chef: You Wash, and I’ll Dry.”

The art of Shepard Fairey and the underground world of street art are the focus of the film “Obey Giant,” available for streaming today on Hulu. Directed by Oscar winner James Moll and produced by James Franco, the film looks at how Fairey rose from his roots in punk music and skateboarding to creating the signature image of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, the famous “Hope” poster. Jeffrey Dahmer is in the air this year, with the forthcoming film, “My Friend Dahmer,” starring “Austin and Ally” star Ross Lynch as the future serial killer when he was in high school. Today, Oxygen airs “Dahmer on Dahmer: A Serial Killer Speaks,” featuring previous interviews with Dahmer’s family members as well as two men who say they were sexually assaulted by Dahmer in the military.

“Elizabeth Smart: Autobiography,” a documentary about the abduction of Elizabeth Smart in 2002 when she was 14, will air on A&E at 9 p.m. Smart participated in the film and tells her own story, with new details of her abduction. The first part of the film airs tonight, with the 90-minute second part airing tomorrow at 9 p.m. The second part of Ricky Schroder’s film “The Volunteers,” the documentary about the war in Syria and the Islamic State, airs on the Audience Network at 10 p.m. TLC welcomes a happy bouncing new series, “The Unexpected,” a reality series about four pregnant teen couples and their parents, premiering at 10 p.m.
HBO2 airs a day of “Vice Principals” episodes before the main HBO channel airs the finale of the goofy great series at 10:35 p.m. Danny McBride and Walton Goggins have great chemistry. AMC launches “AMC Visionaries: Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics” with a two-night premiere. The first episode airs at a special night and time of 11 p.m. today, with the second episode airing at the show’s regular 10 p.m. time slot on Monday, Nov. 13. Kirkman talks to folks like Stan Lee, Famke Janssen, Kevin Smith and Lynda Carter, among others, about the evolution of comic book culture.
