1917

Pianists Ada Clement and Lillian Hodghead open the Ada Clement Piano School in the home of Hodghead’s parents on Sacramento Street in Laurel Heights.

1923

The school is renamed and incorporat­ed as the San Francisco Conservato­ry of Music.

1925

Composer Ernest Bloch signs on as director. Students during that decade include violinists Isaac Stern, left, and Yehudi Menuhin.

1956

The conservato­ry moves into its longtime home at Ortega Street and 19th Avenue, left.

1966

Milton Salkind begins a 25-year term as president, one that brings a new degree of expansion and profession­alism to the school.

1972-83

John Adams teaches compositio­n and other subjects at the conservato­ry.

1992

Colin Murdoch, left, the school’s dean, moves into the presidency.

2006

The conservato­ry relocates to its current home on Oak Street near Civic Center.

2013

David Stull becomes president.

2017

The conservato­ry celebrates the institutio­n’s 100 years.
