Morgan scores as U.S. ties Canada

Alex Morgan scored and Alyssa Naeher had a late stop to help the U.S. Women’s National Team to a 1-1 draw with Canada in an exhibition match Thursday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The U.S. had won six in a row since a 1-0 loss to Australia on July 27 and is 47-3-7 all-time against Canada.

Cal alum Morgan opened the scoring in the 31st minute. Canada failed to clear an entry by the U.S. and Morgan split three defenders and then rolled a shot past Stephanie Labbe into the corner of the net.

Canada’s Adriana Leon tapped in a goal, after two missed chances by Rebecca Quinn, in the 57th minute to tie it.

Canada hasn’t beaten the U.S. since 2001. The teams will play again Sunday in San Jose.

Donovon won’t run: Retired American star Landon Donovan will not run for president of the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Donovan’s agent, Richard Motzkin, confirmed the decision first reported by Sports Illustrate­d.

USSF President Sunil Gulati has not announced whether he will seek a fourth four-year term.

In the wake of the Americans’ failure to qualify for next year’s World Cup, former national team players Paul Caligiuri, Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino are among the candidates for the election in February.

Boston lawyer Steve Gans and Paul LaPointe, Northeast Conference manager of the United Premier Soccer League, also are running.

Friedel to coach New England: Former U.S. national team goalkeeper Brad Friedel is the new head coach of Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution.

Friedel, 46, most recently was head coach of the U.S. under-19 national team.

Friedel made 82 appearance­s for the United States over 13 years and was on the national team’s roster for three World Cups, including the American team that advanced to the quarterfin­als in 2002.

World Cup qualifying: A penalty awarded for a disputed hand ball gave Switzerlan­d a controvers­ial 1-0 victory at Northern Ireland in the first leg of their World Cup playoff. The second leg will be played in Basel, Switzerlan­d, on Sunday . ... Croatia took a decisive step toward qualificat­ion for Russia 2018, overwhelmi­ng Greece for a 4-1 victory in the first leg of their playoff in Zagreb. Greece hosts the second leg of the playoff Sunday.

Stanford 1, Cal 0: The host Cardinal men (15-2-1) defeated the Bears (11-6) in the regular-season finale on Foster Langsdorf ’s goal in the 75th minute. Nico Corti got the shutout with seven saves.
