Ferrari 488GTB

MSRP: $256,550 With a twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 located just behind the driver’s seat, the 488GTB generates a sonorous wail and ferocious acceleration all the way to 8000 rpm, where it makes 661 hp. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is the sole transmission; we estimate a zero to 60 time of 3.0 seconds. Ferrari’s adaptive suspension is relatively compliant without sacrificing handling. For those who want more V-8 music, the Spider offers a retractable hardtop that raises or lowers at speeds up to 25 mph.

McLaren 570S / 570GT

MSRP: $191,100 There are three members of the 570 family, and all are set to kick sand in the faces of lesser cars. There’s the 570S, the 570S Spider, and the 570GT; the S models are sportiest, while the GT is for long-distance-driving comfort. All have a 562-hp twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-8 mounted behind the cabin; a carbon-fiber tub reduces weight and adds strength. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission drives the rear wheels. The S models are marginally quicker to 60 mph, but all have a top speed of 204 mph.

Bugatti Chiron

MSRP: $2,998,000 Leaving the 99.99 percent in its dust, the Chiron is a 1500-hp smackdown of every hypercar ever produced. An 8.0-liter 16-cylinder engine uses four turbochargers to make 1500 hp and 1180 lb-ft of torque, but calling its acceleration “heroic” would be an understatement — Bugatti claims a top speed of 261 mph. A seven-speed dualclutch automatic routes power to all four wheels, but it can do more than straight-line speed. The $2,998,000 price tag is a bourgeoisie bargain — hey, it’s under $3 million.

Lamborghini Aventador

MSRP: $447,295 Brutally powerful and obscenely flamboyant, the Aventador is unburdened by reality. Crazy expensive and crazy fast, it’s capable of amazing performance without feeling like it’s going to spin out into a ditch, which is refreshing in a supercar. Available as a coupe (for now), it has a 6.5-liter 730-hp V-12, a 7-speed automated manual transmission and all-wheel drive. For the ultimate, the Superveloce has 740 hp and a claimed top speed of 217 mph. In our testing, it did 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds.
