Marquise Goodwin:

Sunday was a wrenchingly sad day for 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin.

After Goodwin, whose teammates swear is the fastest man in the NFL, torched the Giants on an 83-yard pass from C.J. Beathard, giving the 49ers a 10-6 lead in the second quarter, Goodwin had a very emotional reaction on the sideline. He left the stadium quickly after the game.

That 83-yard TD was the turning point in the game that busted the 49ers out of their 0-9 start, but it probably won’t be what Goodwin remembers about this day.

Around 4 a.m. Sunday, Goodwin posted on Instagram that he and wife Morgan had lost their son at childbirth.

“(We) had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4 a.m.,” Goodwin posted. “Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan. The pain (physically, mentally, & emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable. Please Pray for the Goodwin family.”

Goodwin elected to play, and he was brilliant, the key man in his team’s breakthrough victory.

He not only hurt the Giants on that 83-yard play, the 49ers’ longest touchdown pass since 2005 (Tim Rattay to Brandon Lloyd, 89 yards), but on the 49ers’ next touchdown, a 47yard pass play to Garrett Celek, Goodwin sprung Celek with a crunching block at the 25.

Goodwin, a U.S. Olympian long jumper and world-class sprinter, was a third-round pick of the Bills in 2013. Injuries have hampered his career, but the 49ers picked him up as a free agent, he’s healthy, and the speed is still there.

His seven TD receptions in the NFL have been for 40, 59, 43, 84, 6, 67 and 83 yards.

“When you’ve got a deep threat like Marquise, you’ve got to find a way to use him,” safety Eric Reid said. “I’m glad that we were able to get him the ball, especially on a day like today for him.

“I have so much respect for him, to come out here and still play, with the hurt that he had in his heart, and to ball out.”
